In class we have been discussing the use of social media for self promotion and gaining employment. I’ve summarised my beliefs about this below.

Pros:
-You can show your content to people all over the world.
-Easily advertise your availability/openings to your entire following who are already interested in your content.
-Can see opportunities for companies/charities/ groups you follow easily without spending time reaching out to them individually.
-Can show small snippets easily for self promotion.
-Employers use social media to find talent sometimes.
-Employers expect you to have social media for certain projects/funds/job opportunities.
-Can create a persona or alternative art.
-Can show only the best and polished parts of yourself and hide the parts where you lack talent.
-Can choose to only show the perfect take or edited version, unlike live performance.
-You can use it as a portfolio, showcasing your work, talents and interests. To show people who you are.

Cons:
-Songs losing creativity to have catchy moments for trending audio.
-Gigs and concerts are more about getting videos than enjoying the experience.
-Death of the local music scene, something that used to be the main way to grow a fan base is now seen as an unnecessary step when you could post online instead.
-Artists blowing up overnight who aren't prepared to release a full album or perform live.
-Views vs actual listens/album sales. Artists losing out on money. Losing actual employment/income.
