1. I was born in the cold,
2. when the sky still wore grey like a blanket.
3. Ice fingers touched my cheeks
4. not cruel, just curious.
5. The trees were bones.
6. Empty, hollow, soon to be full.
7. I felt the maybe of sunshine,
8. hiding in the cracks of the frost.
9. I saw light spill longer each day,
10. like it, too, was growing.
11. A single bud dared the chill.
12. I watched it blink open
13. just like me.
14. My hands, strangers to me
15. found my mother’s smile.
16. My toes curled at the idea of grass.
17. Not yet here, but promised.
18. I heard birds rehearse old songs,
19. soft, unsure, like first words.
20. I cooed back
21. not knowing their language,
22. Not knowing where I belonged.
23. The world was wide,
24. but I was wider inside.
25. Each day, I grew roots in moments.
26. I sprouted wonder.
27.Even silence had a scent.
28. And I breathed it all in.
